Despite ban's lift, no abortions at military hospitals
Article Abstract:
Therapeutic abortions are not being performed at US military hospitals abroad, despite the fact that Pres Clinton lifted a ban on the practice in Feb 1993. One reason is that military doctors who oppose abortion are not compelled to perform the procedure. For example, the chief of obstetrics at the Army hospital in Berlin, Germany, Lt. Col Noel Habib, opposes the practice. Soldiers would still pay $400 for the procedure if it were available, because US government funds may not be used to fund abortions.

Mich. battle foreshadows widespread war on charges
Article Abstract:
Medical patients in Michigan are caught in the middle of a battle between no-fault insurers and health care providers over reimbursement. In an attempt to institute a managed care reimbursement plan, Michigan insurers have adopted the state's workers compensation payment schedule, ignoring the protests of physicians, who insist that they be reimbursed for 'usual, customary and reasonable charges.' Seven hospitals are suing for lost revenue. In the meantime many hospitals are balance billing patients.

The physician's new care companion: interactive videodiscs expand the patient's role in making treatment decisions
Article Abstract:
Videodiscs can aid doctors in educating patients about treatment options. By accessing a touch screen, patients can obtain information about symptoms, causes and treatment options. Video presentations include a twenty-minute overview, which provides feedback from other patients, and a forty-five minute in-depth analysis of a given medical condition. In the US, interactive medical systems are currently being tested by Colorado Kaiser Permanente and Med Center Health Plan.
