Destruction of articular cartilage by alpha-2 macroglobulin elastase complexes: role in rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
Enzyme complexes in synovial fluid can degrade joint cartilage in rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers tested synovial fluid samples on cartilage tissue to determine how enzymes and enzyme inhibitors contribute to and protect against joint damage. Cartilage degradation seemed to be associated with alpha-2 macroglobulin elastase complexes, which was inhibited by alpha-1 protease inhibitor. The elastase enzyme-alpha-2 macroglobulin complex, rather than free elastase in synovial fluid, seems to be the primary destructive substance in the rheumatoid arthritic joint. Alpha-1 protease inhibitor binds to the enzyme complex, preventing its access to the cartilage structure and thereby inhibiting cartilage destruction.

Thickness of human articular cartilage in joints of the lower limb
Article Abstract:
The cartilage of the knee joint is generally thicker than cartilage in the hip, which is thicker than ankle cartilage. Researchers examined lower limb joint cartilage in 11 sets of cadaver joints. Heavier and taller cadavers had thicker cartilage in the knees and hips, and thicker cartilage was less compressible.
