Considering cannabis
Article Abstract:
Marijuana, though illegal, is used for several medical purposes, such as to alleviate interocular pressure in glaucoma patients and to reduce nausea in AIDS patients. Some proponents would like to see the drug downgraded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from Shedule I, for drugs such as heroin, to Shedule II, for drugs with potential for abuse but also clinical value. However, the DEA has refused to downgrade the drug's classification, and has failed allow clinical trials to proceed that would test the drug's efficacy.

Taking the heat; last month's deadly heat wave in Chicago might have been avoided if officials had heeded the lessons learned by other cities
Article Abstract:
During the Chicago, IL, heat wave of Jul 1995 over 500 people died. There was no need for these deaths to occur because there had been information available to prevent them since 1985. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had published its 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report' outlining precautions on Jun 30, 1995. Additional heat waves of this kind are expected to take place in the future.
