Destructive large joint arthritis
Article Abstract:
Patients with painfully swollen shoulder joints and limited pain sensation may have neuropathic joint disease. Neuropathic joint disease is a rapidly progressing and destructive disease of the large joints that is a result of an underlying neurological disorder. Researchers reviewed the records of two patients reporting pain in their right shoulders. Computed tomography (CT) scans and X-rays of the shoulder joints revealed erosion and destruction of the upper arm bones but no evidence of tumor. Doctors found a general loss of pain sensation in both patients. Magnetic resonance images of both patients' spines found a cavity extending from the neck to the middle of the back, part of the brainstem protruding through an opening in this cavity, and an accumulation of fluid in the skull.
