Determinants of vaginal-perinatal integrity and pelvic floor functioning in childbirth
Article Abstract:
Some risk factors for severe vaginal-perineal tears may be predicted before childbirth. Researchers assessed the risk of 459 women who had not born children before of acquiring vaginal-perineal tears during childbirth by measuring pelvic floor strength and assessing personal, pregnancy, and labor information. Women who were unemployed and who spent less time in the pushing stage were much more likely to sustain tears in the upper vagina. These women may have had poor prepregnancy nutrition. Tears from vagina to rectum resulted more from the doctor's actions than from the patient and should be preventable.
