The promotion of good health and well-being for children is essential to improve adult health, and child health surveillance is crucial in attempting to achieve this goal. The National Service Frame-work for Children promotes a new child health programme and if it is to be successful, nurses involved in primary care must play a central role.

The pathophysiology and aetiology of lactose intolerance in infants are described and the way in which one can diagnose and treat it is discussed. Management of the infant by the primary health care team is discussed, with emphasis on advice and nutritional support that can be recommended to parents.
