Diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous facial sinus tracts of dental origin
Article Abstract:
Draining skin lesions in the face may be caused by an undiagnosed dental infection. Infected teeth and adjacent tissues may produce a canal that penetrates soft tissues and exits the skin of the face. Such draining sinus tracts can be definitively diagnosed by placing a radio-opaque material through the wound to reveal the source of infection by x-ray imaging. Failure to identify and treat the underlying dental infection will prevent the facial wound from adequately healing, but they often heal rapidly after root canal or other surgical therapy.
