Pharmacodynamics of levofloxacin: a new paradigm for early clinical trials
Article Abstract:
A model has been developed to estimate the proper dosage of antibiotic to use for individual patients to maximize the cure rate but minimize adverse effects. Researchers compared blood levofloxacin levels in 134 patients with bacterial infections and also calculated the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the drug. This is the amount required to inhibit bacterial growth. Eradication of the bacteria and resolution of symptoms was most likely to occur if the peak drug concentration in the patient's blood was at least 12 times greater than the MIC.

Early inpatient rehabilitation after elective hip and knee arthroplasty
Article Abstract:
Many patients undergoing hip or knee replacement can rehabilitate successfully if discharged from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility just days after the operation. Researchers randomly assigned 71 patients to be discharged to a rehab facility 3 days after the operation or 7 days after. Patients discharged from the hospital 3 days after the operation achieved functional goals faster, at less cost and left the rehabilitation facility earlier than those discharged 7 days after the operation.
