Diagnostic oddities of the strangest form
Article Abstract:
Dentists should be alert to a small number of patients who seek dental treatment for the purpose of getting attention, access to drugs, or who may have a rare condition called Munchausen's syndrome. Patients with Munchausen's syndrome repeatedly lie about their medical or dental conditions and may injure themselves to back up their stories. A researcher presented the dental histories of two patients with Munchausen's syndrome as previously reported in the British Dental Journal. One patient intentionally burned the inside of her cheek with a cigarette to produce sores in her mouth. These patients may repeat their stories to a number of dentists. Dental surgeons may perform surgeries on these patients that only later prove to be unnecessary. Some parents or caregivers may invent conditions for the children or elderly people for whom they are responsible.

A gentle touch is not enough
Article Abstract:
The dental profession should adopt clinical outcome measures to better determine the quality of treatments. Dentistry is just now beginning to assess clinical processes, such as oral cancer screening, dental x-rays, and office infection control procedures, as measures of clinical quality. Patient satisfaction is largely based on judgments of dentist reputation, prices, recommendations of others, and similar subjective assessments. Clinical outcomes provide a more objective evaluation of quality, and would benefit the profession.
