Different routes to professional nursing
Article Abstract:
The advent of a new century forces us to refocus on our vision for nursing and there is a particular need to examine whether the new diploma-level approach gives nurses the skills to provide high-quality patient care. All-graduate entry may disenfranchise many potential nurses and turn nursing into an elitist profession. An alternative based on open entry would give the profession a richness and diversity which it may otherwise lose. Everyone who enters nursing should have an equal right to realise their potential.

Article Abstract:
Up to 91% of Irish trained nurses questioned for a survey felt their training had adequately prepared them for life on the wards, compared with 81% of nurses trained in England. The survey accompanies a report which highlights the differences in nurse training techniques between England, Scotland. Ireland and Wales. Training systems in England are too competitive, compared with Scotland, which relies on students gaining credits through previous experience.
