Disability insurers no longer seek out physicians
Article Abstract:
Disability insurance costs for physicians have risen dramatically in the 1990's, fueled primarily by a significant increase in the number of claims. Approximately 80% of physicians are covered by disability insurance, and physicians comprise over 30% of in-force business for many disability insurers. Declines in termination and interests rates during the 1990's, combined with the increase in claims, has resulted in many disability insurers declining to write new policies for physicians.

Professional courtesy: an act of gratitude
Article Abstract:
Professional courtesy, or the practice of physicians treating other physicians and their families at no cost, is a long tradition in the medical field and should continue regardless of changes in the US health care system. The practice promotes a feeling with kinship with other doctors and is a way of repaying the medical community for its assistance with difficult cases.

Second opinions can be valuable, don't resent them
Article Abstract:
Physicians should allow their patients to seek second opinions. They should allow their patients to compile a list of potential physicians and provide some additional names if the list is too short. This mature behavior ensures that the physician has not relinquished their commitment to their patient even though they have been placed in a difficult situation.
