Discharge dilemmas
Article Abstract:
A joint policy statement issued by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), the British Geriatrics Society and the Assn. of Directors of Social Services in Sep. 1995, highlights the importance of involving skilled nurses in the planning of older people's discharge from hospital into nursing or residential homes. RCN adviser Pauline Ford feels that insufficient recognition is given to nursing skills in discharge planning. British Geriatrics Society policy committee Chmn. Alistair Main agrees and points out that some patients, particularly the frail, are discharged from hospital too quickly.

School and the ME generation
Article Abstract:
Charitable organization Action for ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis) organized a conference to consider the care and education of children with ME or chronic fatigue syndrome. The charity estimates that up to 25,000 children in the UK could have ME. Symptoms associated with the condition make attendance at school very stressful for ME sufferers, and many children with ME receive home teaching. However, the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Psychiatrists and GPs stated in a report that only the worst-affected children should receive home tuition and for as short a period as possible.

United fronts?
Article Abstract:
The new large union Unison and Royal College of Nursing (RCN) are battling to attract nurses as new members. Unison, which will be launched on July 1 1993, will be formed by the merger of NUPE, NALGO and COHSE, all health unions. RCN has almost 300,000 members, and believes nurses are joining it because they fear anonymity in the large union. Unison will consist of separate groups for water, higher education, health, local government, gas, electricity and transport. The estimated 240,000 nurses in the health sector of the union will form a strong voice.
