Dispelling myths: marketing controversial, but not evil

Many physicians remain opposed to medical-practice marketing, but such marketing can be conducted both ethically and effectively. Five myths about medical-practice marketing are debunked. Marketing is not always unprofessional or unethical. Word-of-mouth marketing is not more morally acceptable than other marketing techniques. Making money is not necessarily marketing's only end.

Physicians do not have to consider marketing as a negative strategy for growing business, and it can provide an important link with the community. A thorough study of the local area can provide a doctor with useful demographic information. Referring physicians can be wn over with personal calls and information. Good relationships with other doctors can quickly expand a business.

Physicians' marketing efforts, if not carried out properly, can end in disaster. The keys to effective medical-practice marketing are sending a consistent message and being prepared for growth. A practice should not advertise a service enhancement, extended office hours, for example, unless it is committed to maintaining that enhancement for a reasonable period of time.
