Oral contraceptive use and glucose metabolism in a national sample of women in the United States
Article Abstract:
Most oral contraceptives used in the US as of 2000 do not cause abnormalities in glucose metabolism. This can be an early sign of diabetes, but no effects of oral contraceptives on glucose metabolism were found in a study of 4,120 healthy women and 70 women with diabetes.

Diurnal Variation in Fasting Plasma Glucose: Implications for Diagnosis of Diabetes in Patients Examined in the Afternoon
Article Abstract:
Many cases of diabetes will go undiagnosed if the patient is tested in the afternoon. In a study of 12,882 people, blood sugar levels were higher in the morning than in the afternoon. A lower blood sugar level must be used when testing people in the afternoon.

Diabetes and Decline in Heart Disease Mortality in US Adults
Article Abstract:
Many diabetics have not experienced the substantial drop in mortality rates from heart disease that has occurred since the 1970's. Researchers analyzed mortality rates from heart disease among almost 20,000 people who participated in the First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) conducted between 1971 and 1975 and a follow up survey conducted between 1982 and 1984. Heart disease mortality rates dropped 36% in non-diabetic men but only 13% in diabetic men. Mortality rates dropped 27% in non-diabetic women but actually increased 23% in diabetic women.
