Do it or lose it
Article Abstract:
Dentists should take a more active role in screening patients for oral cancer. One survey found that only 15% of the adults surveyed ever had an oral cancer examination at their dentist's office. Most dentists are already trained to detect oral lesions and oral cancer causes more deaths each year than melanoma or cervical cancer. If oral cancer is detected early, 5-year survival rates approach 80%, compared to 19% in those with advanced cancer at the time of diagnosis. Dental organizations should alert the public to have regular oral cancer screenings during their dental checkups.

Focal infection: back with a bang!
Article Abstract:
Serious infections of the gum tissue may have serious health consequences. More patients may be seeking periodontal treatment as research suggests gum disease may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke and low-birthweight babies. Researchers believe that chronic inflammation may increase the buildup of arterial plaque and increase the risk of heart attack. Periodontal disease also has been implicated as a possible factor in preterm low-birthweight babies, and a European study found a higher rate of stroke in those with poor oral health.

Declaration of independence
Article Abstract:
The editor of the Journal of the American Dental Association presents scenarios illustrating the dilemmas journal editors must sometimes face. Scientists were suddenly faced with these issues when the editor-in-chief of JAMA was fired by the American Medical Association for allegedly publishing a politically motivated article.
