Article Abstract:

Most medical research on osteoarthritis evaluates drugs or surgery to the virtual exclusion of physiotherapy, alternative medicine, behavior change and patient education. A tax on the medical industry would help fund research that pharmaceutical companies are not interested in pursuing.

Most of the research on effective treatments for osteoarthritis focuses on drugs or surgery to the exclusion of other treatments. An evaluation of medical research performed since 1950 found that 59% of the studies evaluated a drug and 26% evaluated a surgical treatment.

Hormone replacement therapy and patterns of osteoarthritis: baseline data from the Ulm Osteoarthritis Study

Article Abstract:

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not appear to prevent osteoarthritis. In a study of 475 women with advanced osteoarthritis, the women who used HRT were just as likely to develop osteoarthritis as those who did not.
