The recent scandal caused by the erroneous joint report by CNN and Time concerning the use of nerve gas in Vietnam by the US has highlighted the need to be critical of mass media. Critics believe that intense competition for ratings and advertising is to blame for the press's irresponsibility.

Thirty-two percent of the respondents to a survey of public trust in mass media treat the news with high skepticism. Sleaze and sensationalism are the biggest problems confounding media today. Tabloid-style news items are regarded by the majority as cheap public discourse.
