Resident pay keeping pace with inflation: but doesn't account for growing loan debt
Article Abstract:
Resident physicians are earning stipends that compensate for inflation, but are paying tuition fees that have increased drastically since the 1970s. First-year stipends averaged $33,387 in 1997-1998, a 1.9% increase over $32,789 for the previous academic year. Tuition amounts, however, have risen well above inflation, creating an average debt of $80,462 for 1997 graduates.
