Doctors' gain falls short of payment reform target
Article Abstract:
Net physician Medicare reimbursement fell 3-4% in 1992 due to a new Resource-based Relative Value Scale for calculating physician payments. Physician compensation was supposed to be budget-neutral, but payments were to be slanted slightly to benefit family doctors. Some physicians compensated for lower fees by increasing the number of procedures they performed. In addition, compensation for family doctors rose only 10%, substantially less than the 15-17% predicted.

RBRVS pay change delay: specialties at odds over practice costs
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn has called for a delay in implementation of reassessments to physician payments from Medicare for practice expenses. The new system, to go into effect Jan 1, 1998, will reduce payments to some specialties and increase others. Physicians want the program delayed until results of a federal Office of Management and Budget survey about practice costs can be taken into account. The new rules are from the Health Care Financing Administration.
