Sign-on bonuses gaining popularity in recruitment
Article Abstract:
Health maintenance organizations and hospitals frequently offer one-time bonuses when they hire medical specialists in fields such as primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and orthopedic surgery. Most bonuses range from $1,000 to $10,000, but primary care physicians may receive $10,000 to $20,000 as an inducement, and obstetricians or orthopedists may receive larger amounts. A survey by William M. Mercer Inc examines the bonuses offered by several medical groups.

HMO retains money, doctors resign
Article Abstract:
A group of 58 Wilmington, NC, specialty physicians placed a notice in a local newspaper announcing that they would not renew their contracts with the local HMO, HealthSource North Carolina Inc. The action was taken after the HMO decided to retain the doctors' withheld payments for 1996, which make up 10% of their income. Other local physicians expressed similar intentions. HealthSource NC's parent company, HealthSource Inc., was acquired in Feb 1997 by CIGNA.
