Physician data require safeguards
Article Abstract:
Pennsylvania and New York are the first states to provide patients with data about physician performance. Other states are ready to follow suit. This practice is controversial because the rights of physicians are placed in conflict with the public's right to know. The most pernicious consequences of data dissemination would be economic credentialing and the increased propensity of physicians to avoid high-risk cases. Fortunately, the AMA House of Delegates has developed guidelines addressing the issue.

Doctors came to do good, but it was too little, too fast
Article Abstract:
A Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala echoes the disappointment of the populace with the speedy treatment given them by a group of physicians and nurses from the United States. Copious quantities of aspirin, vitamins and penicillin were distributed, but no examinations were performed. The Guatemalans who told their stories and described their symptoms continue to suffer without much relief.
