Doctors seek peace through cooperation

Article Abstract:

The World Medical Assn (WMA) is the only international organization of its kind to eschew any affiliation with national governments. Formed in reaction to atrocities committed by physicians during World War II, the WMA has been a bastion for the promotion of medical ethics worldwide. The organization is in the process of setting up an international forum with the aim of achieving consensus among physicians over the issues of medical costs, financing and quality of care - issues that loom large at the present time.

Good communication begins when we learn to listen

Article Abstract:

Effective communication between doctor and patient is essential to a good relationship, and it requires effective listening. A 1990 Miles Pharmaceutical division survey indicated that 25% of patients switched physicians at least once because they felt uncomfortable with the physician, or the doctor failed to relieve their anxieties or answer their questions. Techniques that can foster good communication include use of everyday language, rather than jargon, and body language that communicates interest.

Through decades of practice, two words stand out

Article Abstract:

A retired general surgeon remembers patients who thanked him for his services over his more-than-30 year practice. The doctor recalls two non-English speaking patients who struggled to show their appreciation by saying 'thank you.' He also remembers the gratitude shown by a 7-year-old burn victim and the wife of another patient.
