Teaching Residents About Development and Behavior: Meeting the New Challenge
Article Abstract:
Many pediatric residency programs do not adequately train residents in developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP). About 15% to 20% of all children are taken to a pediatrician for behavioral or developmental problems at some time during childhood. Of 148 US pediatric residency programs surveyed, 87% had a formal curriculum in DBP, but many program directors felt that adoption, violence, substance abuse, and conduct problems were not covered adequately. Many directors noted a lack of qualified faculty, time, money, and instructional resources.

To teach is to learn twice: resident teachers learn more
Article Abstract:
Teaching other doctors may improve learning and retention of information by medical residents. Researchers tested 43 medical residents on oral rehydration, then assigned some to teach a 30-minute class on the topic, while others listened to a 30-minute lecture on rehydration. After 6 to 8 weeks, the residents who prepared and delivered a lecture performed significantly better on a test of oral rehydration than those who merely listened to a lecture. Teaching is an effective learning tool for residents.
