Don't just role over and die
Article Abstract:
A study into the work of UK mental health nurses found that many were concerned their primary role will become the supervision of support workers. They acknowledged many psychiatric patients required less medical and more social input, which had negative implications for their role as nurses. Most respondents considered the only skill attributable solely to nurses was the administration of medicines. Around 33% found multidisciplinary team working satisfactory but many others reported feeling pressurized whilst in a team. Some 57 workers were asked for their views of mental nursing.

The vital ingredient
Article Abstract:
Consulting service users about mental health services should be included in the planning and evaluation of new services right from the start. At present, users are being involved in some conferences on health services, but this sounds like tokenism. Users need to be involved at the beginning of the planning stage, so that they can state what services they want, and how they should be provided. However, users' views should not be asked just for the sake of it, and then ignored. The health services must be prepared to modify plans in the light of users' suggestions.
