Nobel sentiments
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian government's response to the decision by the Nobel committee to award the 1996 Nobel peace prize to two East Timor activists has been extremely defensive. This will do little to boost the credibility of Indonesia's actions in East Timor. Indonesia will now find that its political, economic and military dealings come under increased international scrutiny, and will find it hard to balance out the strong international support which will go to Carlos Belo, the Roman Catholic bishop of East Timor, and Jose Ramos-Horta, an East Timor activist.
