Douching
Article Abstract:
Teenage girls and young women should be discouraged from douching as vaginal douching is associated with a higher risk of bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ectopic pregnancy. Studies have shown no physiological benefits from it, and those who douche are also at highest risk for sexually transmitted diseases. Possible influence by advertising to douche for cleanliness and elimination of odor is the moving force for the use of douches regardless of the fact that it disrupts the balance of vaginal flora, allowing faster growth of pathogenic organisms which may enter without protective organisms in place.

Adolescent girls and pelvic inflammatory disease: experience and practices of emergency department pediatricians
Article Abstract:
Emergency room pediatricians are less likely to admit adolescent girls for pelvic inflammatory disease than is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 51 emergency room pediatricians who had diagnosed PID in the past two years, fewer than half recommended admission, and just over half arranged for a follow up within 72 hours. Adolescent girls have a much higher risk of complications than adult women, but issues of economy in managed care situations may be overriding medical decisions.
