Down among the women
Article Abstract:
A conference to discuss women's health care was held in the US Virgin Islands and was attended by nurses and midwives from 13 countries. Speakers covered a range of women's issues and focused on the social and economic factors which shape women's life experiences both in the West and in the developing world. Empowerment was a common thread running through the speeches, and nurses were urged to become more involved with women's issues because improving the status of women will ultimately result in the status of nurses also being improved.

Taking the lead
Article Abstract:
European Union (EU) nursing leaders are to meet in London, England, on May 12 1998. Such meetings are rare but important if nurses are to have a key role in EU decision-making. They need to strengthen their ties with one another and form a stronger force within the EU. The issue of public health forms an increasingly significant part of the EU's agenda. The European Commission's strategy on public health has identified the major health challenges in the community and project funding is related to these priorities.
