The esthetic dental implant: letting restoration be the guide
Article Abstract:
Dentists can identify the optimal esthetic site for dental implants and reconstruct the bone and gum tissues to support the dental restoration. Esthetic implants appear natural and match the original teeth and gums. Prior to implant placement, dentists can study a patient's smile to evaluate the continuity of the teeth and gums and to determine if the interface between an implant and the gumline would be visible. The bone and gums at an implant site must be able to esthetically and functionally support an implant. Implants may be placed immediately after tooth extraction, eight to 10 weeks after tooth loss, or three months or longer after an extraction. Defects in the bone or gums at the implant site may be classified according to severity. In class I, II, or III defects, bone regeneration and implant placement can be performed together. Class IV or V defects require bone reconstruction prior to implant placement. After the implant has healed, the gums may be reconstructed.
