Drinking on campus: undergraduate intoxication requiring emergency care
Article Abstract:
College student drinking may lead to the need for emergency room care. Over a two-year period, 44 students presented at the emergency room of a hospital located at a major university. This calculated to 3.9 per 1,000 students. Freshmen presented at the emergency room at a rate of 9.3 per 1,000 per year, although studies show freshmen do not drink more than other classes. Nearly half were women, although studies show women are less likely to binge drink. Twenty percent of the students had injuries from a fall and one required mechanical ventilation for breathing difficulties.

Article Abstract:
The DRAMS (drinking reasonably and moderately with self-control) training scheme, offered by the Health Education Board for Scotland (HEBS), for general medical practitioners (GPs) helps those with patients whose health is being affected by their alcohol intake. The training scheme includes booklets, videos and skills training and most GPs found the training worthwhile. More than six per cent of of GPs in Scotland have become DRAM users.
