Linking computer applications for performance improvement projects
Article Abstract:
Several computer applications including Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), suites, and macros can help create Performance Improvement summaries. OLE and DDE are the most advanced technologies and allow the user to periodically update information in one set of files while the application automatically updates any linked files. These applications can compile these files and generate the desired document. OLE, however, requires substantial memory capacity and may become disengaged if files are moved.

Are you linking competence to outcomes?
Article Abstract:
Accreditation requires that competence be assessed effectively for all clinical providers, nurses among them. Competence assessment must change as roles change and must be linked to outcomes, clinical outcomes especially, not just ability to do a certain thing. Problem-solving abilities and experience are factors. In the health care system are factors that influence attitudes of a nurse, what the nurse actually does, as opposed to what he or she is able to do, and thus outcomes in a patient.

Process improvement plan for the reduction of nosocomial pneumonia in patients on ventilators
Article Abstract:
A special task force reduced the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia in one hospital. The team identified crucial areas of improvement, such as testing a closed suction system, cleaning ventilators, and staff education. Risk factors for developing pneumonia during mechanical ventilation included being female, longer periods of intubation, and the lack of an H2 blocker. Care changes lead to substantial cost savings, including shorter hospital stays.
