The new government strategy for public health: implications for health education
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government has announced a new strategy for public health which focuses clearly on reducing poverty, unemployment, poor housing, environmental pollution, and the poorer health of ethnic minority groups. Health education will be concentrated in areas of greatest need, and health education personnel may be required to assist with community health programmes. Smoking, HIV, AIDS and the importance of immunizing children will also be targeted at underprivileged groups in society. Health education will only be successful if poverty and unemployment are tackled also.

Drug education in primary schools: putting what we know into practice
Article Abstract:
Health educators developed a drug education programme to be used in schools with children aged 9-10 years. The programme incorporated methods which experts believe are most effective in drug education. These methods included the use of drama and a focus on decision-making and relationship issues. The programme involved teacher training and parent consultations. An evaluation of the programme revealed that children had more understanding of drug issues and that teachers and parents felt more confident about discussing drug issues with their children.
