Drug's success suggests new protocols for stroke treatment
Article Abstract:
The emergence of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) changes the way that physicians and hospitals must deal with stroke victims. A study conducted by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke reveals that patients given t-PA within three hours of suffering an ischemic stroke were 30%-50% more likely to recover than if given no treatment. The success of t-PA, though limited to specific types of stroke and contingent upon prompt administration of the drug, necessitates that medical personnel treat stroke more aggressively than in the past.

Doctors may boycott to push drug firm to release RU-486
Article Abstract:
Physicians and women's groups are threatening to boycott Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals if shareholder Roussel Uclaf SA persists in keeping its abortion pill, RU-486, out of the US. Roussel has wavered on marketing the drug here because of the controversy surrounding it. Physicians insist that RU-486 be made available for research since it has the potential to treat breast cancer and other diseases. Hoechst says this is simply a public relations ploy. Company officials claim that they gave up all rights to the drug in 1985.
