Dynamic modeling of imatinib-treated chronic myeloid leukemia: Functional insights and clinical implications
Article Abstract:
A mathematical modeling approach was used to show for two independent datasets that clinically observed BCR-ABL1 transcript dynamics during imatinib treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) could consistently be explained by a selective functional effect of imatinib on proliferation leukemia stem cells. The results suggest that general potential of imatinib to induce a complete elimination of the malignant clone and the therapeutic benefit of imatinib could under certain circumstances be accelerated by combination with proliferation-stimulating treatment strategies.

Targeted cancer therapeutics: The heartbreak of success
Article Abstract:
A human study by scientists reports that advanced heart failure develops in individuals receiving imatinib mesylate, a drug widely hailed for its ability to treat individuals with a deadly form of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Findings of the study revealed that scientists observed a striking 50% decrease in the pumping capacity of the heart in individuals taking the drug.

Cancer gets the Chk'ered flag
Article Abstract:
Certain oncogene expression leads to growth arrest of cancer cells, which occurs through a p16INK4A pathway dependent on the DNA damage response (DDR). The findings suggest that the loss of cell division through apoptosis or senescence reduces the risk of cancer but might accelerate the rate of aging.
