Improving the supply of organ donors in the UK: a review of public policy
Article Abstract:
There is a shortage of organs for transplants in the UK, and this applies especially to kidneys. There is public support for the idea of donating organs but between a fifth and a quarter of the population has organ donor cards. Donation rates could be improved if more people had cards. National registers would also help tackle the shortage. Waiting lists for transplants would be shortened and there would be fewer people needing dialysis, which would reduce costs.

Promoting sexual health: the local government contribution
Article Abstract:
Sexual health involves a range of issues including sexually transmitted diseases and attitudes to sexuality. The emphasis in the UK has tended to be on prevention of disease and pregnancy, with particular emphasis on the problems posed by HIV infection. Local government should be involved in this issue to a wider extent than simply seeking to prevent disease. There is a need for co-operation with the National Health Service and with other bodies.
