New options for diagnosis and treatment of ectopic pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Since 1970, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy increased from 4.5 for every 1,000 pregnancies to 16.8 per 1,000 pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg develops outside the uterus. Despite this dramatic increase in cases, mortality rates have dropped from 35.5 for every 10,000 ectopic pregnancies to 3.4 per 10,000 ectopic pregnancies. This is due to advanced diagnostic techniques, including ultrasound imaging and laparoscopy, which can detect the condition at an earlier stage. If detected early, 95% of patients can be treated surgically. Sixty percent of surgically treated patients can subsequently have a normal pregnancy. Surgery can be avoided by treating patients with methotrexate. Injecting a concentrated glucose solution into the gestational sac during laparoscopy has been shown to be effective and to have few side effects. Thirty percent of women with ectopic pregnancy become infertile after the event. In vitro fertilization can offer these women a chance for a normal pregnancy.
