Educational programs in US medical schools, 1995-1996
Article Abstract:
Medical schools are attempting to adapt to a changing health care system. Data from the 1995-1996 Liaison Committee on Medical Education revealed that the number of medical students admitted in the 1995-1996 school year was approximately the same as in the 1985-1986 school year. A total of 46,591 students applied to the 124 US and 16 Canadian programs and 17,357 were accepted. Women made up 42.5% of the applicants and minorities accounted for 11%. The number of faculty members increased, especially in family medicine. Seventy schools also opened community clinics and 40 owned an HMO or other managed care organization.
