Efavirenz plus zidovudine and lamivudine, efavirenz plus indinavir, and indinavir plus zidovudine and lamivudine in the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults
Article Abstract:
The AIDS drug efavirenz combined with the drugs zidovudine and lamivudine appears to be more effective in treating HIV infection than other drug combinations, including protease inhibitors. Researchers randomly assigned 450 HIV patients to take one of three drug combinations: efavirenz with either the protease inhibitor indinavir or zidovudine and lamivudine, or zidovudine, lamivudine, and indinavir. Patients who received efavirenz, zidovudine and lamivudine were more likely to achieve undetectable blood viral levels than patients in the other groups. These patients were also less likely to have side effects from the drugs.

HIV-protease inhibitors
Article Abstract:
HIV-protease inhibitors have led to substantial reductions in blood levels of HIV, but they do not eradicate the virus completely. Nevertheless, most symptomatic HIV patients with CD cell counts less than 500 should receive protease inhibitors in combination with nucleoside or non-nucleoside drugs such as zidovudine. HIV-protease inhibitors include the drugs indinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir and nelfinavir. These drugs inhibit a viral enzyme that allows the virus to reproduce. They interact with some other drugs used in HIV patients and the patient can also develop resistance to the drugs.

Persistence of HIV-1 transcription in peripheral-blood mononuclear cells in patients receiving potent antiretroviral therapy
Article Abstract:
HIV continues to reproduce in immune cells even though patients are taking highly active antiretroviral therapy. This combination therapy for HIV infection includes protease inhibitors, and can suppress blood levels of the virus to undetectable levels. Researchers measured HIV in peripheral blood mononuclear cells every six months from five HIV-infected men who were taking highly active antiretroviral therapy. All five had undetectable blood levels of the virus. However, analysis of the blood cells revealed that the virus was still actively reproducing, although at much lower levels.
