Effect of 8 week intake of probiotic milk products on risk factors for cardiovascular diseases
Article Abstract:
There is a decrease from baseline in low density lipoprotein-cholesterol following eight weeks of consuming the fermented milk product GAIO, which contains the bacterial culture CAUSIDO. It is suggested that the reason for the observed hypocholesterolaemic effect is connected with the bacteria culture in the product. A possible explanation could be a link between gut microflora and cholesterol absorption in the small intestine. It is uncertain why this research found a negative correlation between changes in low density lipoprotein-cholesterol and changes in body weight.

Obesity: an inherited metabolic deficiency in the control of macronutrient balance?
Article Abstract:
Certain individuals are more predisposed to obesity compared to others. This fact led to the presumption that the predisposition may be linked to genetic explanations. In these subjects who are more inclined to obesity, it was observed that there is an impaired capability to increase lipid oxidation. When challenged with a particularly high-fat diet unmatched to their metabolic requirements, energy expenditure is suppressed and a lot of dietary fat is stored. The decrease in carbohydrate stores will stimulate appetite and further increase food intake.

A method to achieve control of dietry macronutrient composition in ad libitum diets consumed by free-living subjects
Article Abstract:
There is a lack of appropriate biological markers of intake of certain macro- and micronutrients. This has led to an increasing reliance on data obtained from dietary records. However dietary records can be inaccurate in determining energy intake according to studies. A new method has been developed to reduce the uncertainty concerning dietary compliance. It is based on food provision by self-selection in a shop using specially designed computer programs.
