Oral Androstenedione Administration and Serum Testosterone Concentrations in Young Men
Article Abstract:
Androstenedione may increase blood levels of testosterone and estradiol in many men. Androstenedione is a steroid hormone that is converted into testosterone. It is available without a prescription and is used by some athletes to increase strength and performance. Researchers randomly assigned 42 healthy men to take 100 milligrams per day of androstenedione, 300 milligrams per day, or a placebo for 7 days. Men taking 300 milligrams had significantly increased blood levels of testosterone and also estradiol.

Trace Contamination of Over-the-Counter Androstenedione and Positive Urine Test Results for a Nandrolone Metabolite
Article Abstract:
Some over-the-counter anabolic steroids may be contaminated with a steroid that can cause a positive urine test for the prohibited steroid nandrolone. Many of the steroids were improperly labeled and did not contain 100% of the steroid.

Effect of Oral Androstenedione on Serum Testosterone and Adaptations to Resistance Training in Young Men: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Article Abstract:
Androstenedione does not appear to increase testosterone and may have side effects. Androstenedione is a precursor of testosterone, and is marketed as a natural alternative to anabolic steroids. Researchers randomly assigned 20 men to take androstenedione or a placebo for up to eight weeks. The men also performed 8 weeks of whole-body resistance training. Androstenedione did not increase testosterone levels or increase muscle mass or muscle strength. However, it raised blood levels of the female hormones estradiol and estrone, which are produced from testosterone.
