Effect of a garlic oil preparation on serum lipoproteins and cholesterol metabolism: a randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
Garlic does not appear to lower blood cholesterol or other fatty substances in the blood. Researchers gave 25 patients with elevated blood cholesterol levels garlic oil twice a day for 12 weeks or a placebo. The garlic oil did not significantly reduce blood cholesterol levels or the levels of any other fatty substance in the blood, including triglycerides and lipoproteins. The oil also did not affect the synthesis and metabolism of cholesterol or its chemical precursors.

Diet first, then medication for hypercholesterolemia
Article Abstract:
Some people with high cholesterol levels may want to change their diet instead of taking a pill. A study published in 2003 showed that a low-fat diet based on soy protein, soluble fiber, plant sterols, and nuts can lower blood cholesterol as much as a statin drug. This is important for people who can't take a statin for whatever reason. However, the patient must be highly motivated to follow the diet for long periods of time.

Individual Cholesterol Variation in Response to a Margarine- or Butter-Based Diet: A Study in Families
Article Abstract:
The response to a cholesterol-lowering diet has a genetic component, according to a study of 46 families. Among the 134 children, family membership accounted for 40% of the variability to a cholesterol-lowering diet. Overweight persons had a smaller response to the diet than normal-weight persons.
