Effect of oral contraceptive progestins on serum copper concentration
Article Abstract:
Research suggests that people with higher serum copper levels are at risk from cardiovascular diseases. Oral contraceptive usage has been linked to increased serum copper concentration, but little is known about the influence of different oral contraceptives on serum copper concentrations. A new study investigates the effect on serum copper concentrations of different oral contraceptives. Findings suggest that serum copper concentration increases when all types of oral contraceptives are used, but there is a more pronounced elevation when antiandrogen oral contraceptives are used.

Use of oral contraceptives and serum beta-carotene
Article Abstract:
A cross-sectional epidemiologic study was conducted among a healthy population of nonpregnant and nonlactating German women to determine the effect of oral contraceptives (OC) on serum concentration of the antioxidant beta-carotene. The results showed that there is an age-dependent inverse relationship between OC use and beta-carotene with the strongest negative effect seen among women above 35 years old. Further studies are needed to clarify the risk of the observed negative effect of OC use on beta-carotene in relation to the development of cardiovascular diseases.
