Use of lavender oil for perineal discomfort
Article Abstract:
Ninety percent of mothers suffering from perineal discomfort immediately after childbirth felt better after having a bath, with women who used pure lavender oil in their baths expressing a slightly lower feeling of discomfort than those who did not, although the difference was not significant. Mothers using lavender oil also did not have a significantly different mood score to those mothers who bathed without the oil. The use of lavender oil was described as pleasant, with no side-effects reported.

Extending the midwives' role in perineal management
Article Abstract:
Midwives are frequently involved in the initial treatment of the perineum after a normal vaginal delivery, but in most cases do not have the chance to follow up the long-term effects of their treatment, as care is then transferred to a GP or obstetrician. A study undertaken by midwives at the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust has aimed to overcome this problem by establishing an audit system. This allows women to be followed up for up to 13 months after giving birth.

Perineal trauma
Article Abstract:
There are a number of ways in which women can work with their midwives to minimise difficulties with the perineum during childbirth and thus avoid an unnecessary episiotomy. A good understanding between the patient and the midwife is essential, and a peaceful atmosphere in the delivery room should also be ensured. There should be minimal intervention during the second stage of labour, and adequate postnatal care should be given to prevent perineal discomfort.
