Effect of proton-pump inhibitor therapy on diagnostic testing for Helicobacter pylori
Article Abstract:
Physicians should wait at least two weeks after treatment with proton pump inhibitors ends before testing patients for Helicobacter pylori. Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium responsible for some gastrointestinal diseases and proton pump inhibitors are commonly used to eliminate the infection. However, when given alone, these drugs suppress the organism, which may lead to false-negative tests. In a study of 93 patients taking a proton pump inhibitor, 33% had a false-negative test while taking the drug. After the drug was stopped, 9% still had a false-negative test at three days, 3% had one at seven days, and none had one at 14 days.

Exposure to Helicobacter pylori does not appear to increase a man's risk of having a heart attack, according to a study of 890 male doctors participating in the Physicians' Health Study.
