The utility of duplex ultrasound scanning of the renal arteries for diagnosing significant renal artery stenosis
Article Abstract:
Duplex ultrasound scanning may prove to be a useful tool in diagnosing constriction in kidney vasculature. This procedure is non-invasive, cost effective, and relatively accurate. However, it also requires a great deal of time and skill to administer. In a study, patients with a likelihood of vascular kidney disease were scanned with both duplex ultrasound and screened with arteriography, the current standard technique. There was a significant correlation between these two techniques. Overall, there was 98% agreement both in detecting the presence of vascular stricture and in verifying its absence. This technique also provides other useful imaging information about the kidney such as size, blood flow information and visualization of the renal artery.

Diagnosing primary HIV infection
Article Abstract:
It may be very difficult to diagnose HIV infection in its early stages, according to a study of 436 people. The body doesn't product antibodies against the virus immediately, and the symptoms are not specific to HIV infection. The p24 antigen test can miss up to 10% of those who are HIV-positive and the HIV RNA test can be positive even if the patient is HIV-negative.

Diagnosis of acute HIV infection: it's time to get moving!
Article Abstract:
All patients who go to a doctor or emergency room with flu-like symptoms should be tested for HIV even if they have no known risk factors. This would allow doctors to catch the infection while it is still in the early stages so the patient can modify his or her lifestyle and begin treatment.
