Effect of race on insurance coverage and health service use for HIV-infected gay men
Article Abstract:
White gay men may use different services than black gay men and these differences in health service use may account for racial differences in health outcomes. Researchers analyzed health service use among 307 HIV-infected gay men in the Baltimore, MD, center enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. Black men were just as likely as white men to have health and dental insurance, including private insurance, and were just as likely to be hospitalized and to take AIDS drugs. However, white gay men were more likely to use outpatient services and dental services.

Health services use by urban women with or at risk for HIV-1 infection: the HIV Epidemiology Research Study (HERS)
Article Abstract:
HIV-infected women appear to use health services heavily but do not necessarily receive the drugs that would prolong their lives. Researchers analyzed health services use and other factors in 1,310 women at risk for HIV infection, of whom 863 were HIV-positive. Over half were intravenous drug users and 77% were African American. HIV-positive women were more likely to have been hospitalized or to use outpatient services. Although 86% of HIV-positive women used health services, only half of those with CD4 counts less than 200 were taking antiviral drugs.
