Effect of zidovudine on human placental trophoblast and Hofbauer cell functions
Article Abstract:
The drug zidovudine (ZDV) appears to inhibit the DNA synthesis of placental trophoblast cells and their secretion of the hormone progesterone. ZDV is used to treat HIV infection. Trophoblasts are the most active cells of the placenta and play an important role in maintaining pregnancy through cell growth and hormone secretions. Trophoblasts and Hofbauer cells, which are also found in the placenta, were isolated and the effects of ZDV on cell function were evaluated. ZDV significantly inhibited DNA synthesis in the trophoblasts but not in the Hofbauer cells. The hormones placental lactogen and choriogonadotropin were only affected minimally by ZDV, but progesterone secretion was significantly inhibited. ZDV had no significant effect on protein synthesis in either trophoblasts or Hofbauer cells.

Optimization of lipid-indinavir complexes for localization in lymphoid tissues of HIV-infected Macaques
Article Abstract:
A novel lipid-indinavir nanoparticles targeted to lymphoid tissues is developed. Indinavir concentrations in lymph node monocellular cells patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy are approximately 25 percent to 35 percent of those in blood mononuclear cells, suggesting that drug insufficiency contributes to residual virus in lymphoid tissues.

Pregnant HIV-infected women who take highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) may reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to their baby, according to a study of HIV infection in pregnant monkeys. HAART consists of three drugs, including a protease inhibitor.
