Effectiveness of paclitaxel in treating papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum in an adolescent
Article Abstract:
Taxol successfully treated papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum in a teenaged girl after other chemotherapy failed. This type of cancer, which has features in common with ovarian cancer, only appears to have been reported once in a child. A 15-year-old girl presented with a history of abdominal pain and swelling. Blood levels of CA 125, a marker for cancer, were elevated. Surgery revealed one large tumor and many smaller tumor nodules throughout the pelvis. The large tumor was removed. Two chemotherapy regimens failed to produce improvement. The patient was enrolled in a study of high-dose taxol, and although she experienced some complications from the treatment, the cancer was gone after two courses of therapy. She has since had a recurrence in one ovary, which was removed.

Contribution of endogenous endothelin-1 to basal vascular tone during normal pregnancy and preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to determine the physiologic role for endogenous endothelin in the regulation of vascular tone during normal pregnancy and preeclampsia. The vascular sensitivity to endothelin-1 is not altered during normal pregnancy as compared to preeclamptic pregnancy and reduced endothelin dependence during pregnancy might be one mechanism behind the fall in peripheral vascular resistance.
