Effectiveness of sealant treatment over five years in an insured population
Article Abstract:
Dental sealants can lower the rate of cavity formation in children with a high risk of dental cavities. In a study of 10,159 children who were followed for five years, less than 20% had been treated with dental sealant. However, the rate of cavity formation in these children was about half the rate in children who were not treated with dental sealant. The sealant seemed to be most effective within three years of its placement.

A clinical evaluation of air-abrasion treatment of questionable carious lesions: a 12-month report
Article Abstract:
It may not be necessary to use air-abrasion to diagnose incipient pit-and-fissure cavities. This technique removes some of the enamel, which must be replaced by a sealent. However, sealants also need periodic renewal or replacement, leading to a continual treatment pattern.
