Adverse outcomes of underuse of beta-blockers in elderly survivors of acute myocardial infarction
Article Abstract:
Physicians appear to be reluctant to prescribe beta blockers in elderly heart attack patients and this underuse could have serious health consequences. Researchers analyzed beta blocker use in 5,332 elderly patients who had a heart attack between 1987 and 1992. Only 21% received beta blockers in 1992, a rate similar to that in 1987. Those who did receive beta blockers had almost half the death rate than those who didn't and were hospitalized less often. This reduction in mortality was seen even in those 75 or older.

Emergency department use and subsequent hospitalization among members of a high-deductible health plan
Article Abstract:
The relationship between transition to a high-deductible health plan and emergency department use for low- and high-severity conditions and also the changes in subsequent hospitalizations are investigated. The results have shown that traditional health plan members who changed to high-deductible coverage visited the emergency departments less frequently than controls, with reductions occurring primarily in repeat visits for conditions that are not classified as high severity.
