Effects of antipyrine on umbilical and regional metabolism in late gestation in the fetal lamb
Article Abstract:
Antipyrine may affect fetal blood flow distribution and fetal metabolism. Antipyrine is a drug used to measure blood flow in the umbilical cord and uterus in animal studies of fetal metabolism. Among 11 fetal lambs, six were treated intravenously with antipyrine and five were not. Blood flow in the umbilical cord and to the lower body organs was similar in the two treatment groups. Blood flow to other tissues of the lower body was reduced in the fetuses treated with antipyrine, compared with those not treated. Treatment with antipyrine changed the blood flow to the upper body. Blood flow to the heart increased in the fetuses treated with antipyrine, but blood flow to upper body tissue decreased. Treatment with antipyrine also increased anaerobic, or non-oxygen-requiring, metabolism in the lower limbs.

Effect of lipopolysaccharide on uterine contractions and prostaglandin production in pregnant rats
Article Abstract:
Bacterial lipopolysaccharides may stimulate the production of prostaglandins and oxytocin in the uterus. This could explain how a uterine infection could cause premature labor. Drugs that inhibit prostaglandin production might be useful in preventing premature birth in women with uterine infections.

Prostaglandin endoperoxide H synthase type 1 and type 2 messenger ribonucleic acid in human fetal tissues throughout gestation and in the newborn infant
Article Abstract:
The enzymes prostaglandin endoperoxide H synthase type 1 and type 2 occur in many fetal tissues, including lung, kidney, intestine, heart, brain, and stomach. These enzymes catalyze the final step in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins, which may play an important role in fetal development.
